So, I decided to do more cultural research yesterday, and this research I decided would be best done at an amusement park. It’s obvious that to truly observe a culture you have to see them uninhibiited. And while it’s hard to catch a Japanese person off guard, I think I managed it at least a few times amidst the various attractions of FujiQ Highland, a theme park just a stone’s throw from the majestic beauty Mt. Fuji.

So I went to my first true Japanese festival yesterday and it was pretty cool experience. The tradition was heavy in the air, and then the festive spirit was also heavy in the air. It was sort of nice to experience what I’d seen many times in various media, but maybe that also means it’s lost some of that mysterious magic. (more…)
I don’t really have any great stories to enthrall the masses with. That’s part of the reason I’ve not updated in awhile. The topics of the my ranting today shall include all sorts of interesting (not interesting) things. Including, Japanese nature, the place I’m staying, and maybe crime (not). (more…)
This post has nothing to do with Japan, in essence. Go figure.
When people consider there sound listening preferences, most of the time the emphasis is placed on the device. I don’t want to downplay that. Picking out the right walkingman or ipod or whatever is important. You have to make sure the device matches your preferences and what you do and all that. However, an almost equally important decision is what you use to get the sound from your nifty little device to your ears. (more…)
So, I went to Hiroshima for a day essentially and it was a pretty good trip.
As usual this post will include some random tidbits about things I noticed during the time period it covered. Including, but not limited to, train travel (and being older), food, and losing things. (more…)
I need to start getting up earlier in general. It’s really a part of my sleeping with other people. I tend not to get up when other people are sleeping, because I think I’ll bother them. But I’m trying to get over that. They certainly don’t afford me the same courtesy. In fact I’m pretty sure for the most part, everyone except the Japanese are inherently rude.
So today all I did was went to Comiket for a few hours. (more…)
Friday I pretty much chilled. I have a headache which is annoying me. Today, I came back to Tokyo, and went to a bit of b-boy park 2007. It was pretty awesome. Basically, it’s a bunch of hip hop of the Japanese variety. The rappers were pretty good, the skate boarders were really not impressive, the graffiti was pretty awesome as well. Probably the best part of it though were the break dancers, they had this cool little stage for them doing all sorts of cool dance moves. I have some pretty good videos possibly.
Tomorrow is Comiket. Big fan made comics convention. I’ll let you know how it goes.
I’m back with more interesting tales of my time in the land of the rising sun.
The first thing I’m going to talk about is trains because they’re awesome and thus worth mentioning.
Japan has pretty incredibly figured out how to make the trains run on time, even without being fascist or italian. (more…)
So, I skipped updating this blog yesterday, because I didn’t really think there was that much to say, thus you get a super special combined report today. (more…)
Today was a pretty nice lazy saturday. I went to the zoo around noon and saw the giant pandas and tigers and bears (oh my). They also had a komodo dragon which was pretty awesome. I guess these posts aren’t very interesting, when all I do is normal stuff.
It was mad hot though. After the first hour or so, I was about to pass out. Saved, fortunately, by lunch in an ACed building. Also, saw some classic paddle boats. Some had swans. Tomorrow, yoyogi park and other cool stuff.
Did laundry in the evening, a pretty easy, albeit much too expensive process.
Peace out.
